NEW CONSTRUCTION AND ADDITION

Having outgrown there small 600sf home with 3 young children, the homeowners needed and wanted a new space that they could really grow in to.  Due to city regulations, the original home (or part thereof) had to remain.  The challenge was how to create something that looks and feels like a Nordic influenced home, while still conforming to the existing structure restrictions.

From the exterior, the new massing of the house seems relatively simple with two steep gables framing the roofs.   Inside tells a different story with an open concept floor plan, lofted area and full basement.   To mask the existing home, a garage connector attached the new to the old, and the cottage was clad in the same vertical metal siding from the new building.   Creating separate spaces for all family members to enjoy while designating gathering spaces for friends and family alike was the basis of the design curriculum.
